Andreas F. von Recum,
Dr. von Recum received his professional (DVM) and his first academic research degree (Dr. med. vet.) from the Free University of Berlin (Germany) in 1968 and 1969 respectively. Subsequently, he earned a PhD degree in veterinary (experimental) surgery at Colorado State University in 1974. Most of his research career has been spent in biomaterials science and engineering (at Clemson University) with a special interest in the mechanisms of biocompatibility. He is an international fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE), a member of the Society for Biomaterials and the Academy of Surgical Research. He serves the Biomedical Engineering Center (within the Colleges of Engineering) as its 5th Director, since August 1, 2002. His immediate goals are to convert the graduate research center into an academic department and to focus the department's research involvement within a small specialty of the otherwise large field of biomedical engineering.
