Professional Experience

Dr. Zhao has been working on development of functional microsystems for biomedical application during his PhD education, where he collaborated with a group of engineering scientists, physicists, biologists, and medical doctors. This experience offered him the opportunity to witness the emerging of different scientific fields, helping to enhance his understanding of scientific issues from different perspectives. Such interdisciplinary environment also promoted his leadership, teamwork and communication skills.

Right after his graduation, he joined Biomedical Engineering Department at OSU. He continues his research in the areas of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (NEMS), and specific issues motivated by biomedical applications, including material aspects, mechanics, and manufacturing technologies at small scale.

Research Interests

Our research stems from fundamental engineering fields and aims at development of integrated functional micro/nano devices in ways to provide biological insights that can be easily assimilated by biologists. The research is focused on the development of

  • Non-Conventional Microfabrication Technologies and Materials
  • Microdevices and Nanodevices for Biosensing/actuating Applications
  • NEMS-based Study of Cellular and Sub-Cellular Mechanics
